Our History

Suffolk Latch Company first began as a manufacturing company in 1997, making coat racks, mirrors and oak ledge & brace doors. Carl, the company's founder, was determined to source quality hand forged and cast products and his search took him overseas. Partnering with skilled artisans, Carl found high quality, hand forged items made on the anvil using traditional methods.

Then recession hit. As the company mostly supplied retail outlets, the full force of the economic downturn was felt. This led to the difficult decision to leave manufacturing altogether and concentrate on supplying ironmongery.

The Suffolk Latch Company online store was launched in 2007. Initially focussing on traditional hand forged hardware, the collection has now grown to include a wide range of architectural ironmongery, door & window furniture, cabinet furniture, front door furniture and accessories.

Suffolk Latch Company is a friendly, family run business. Carl and his wife Sharon are the beating heart of the business and are involved in everything from speaking directly to customers, to deciding upon new product lines.

Architectural Ironmongery

Architectural ironmongery (also known as architectural hardware) is the term used to describe the metal products used in a house, such as door knobs, lever handles, hinges, locks, latches and window furniture etc.

Suffolk Latch Company has a growing range of solid brass, bronze and cast iron products in a selection of classic designs. The brass products are available in a variety of finishes, offering something for every home, colour scheme and interior design. Our cast iron products are forged from solid cast iron with an antiqued or black finish.

The wooden products, including the ever popular beehive door knob in rosewood and ebonised finshes, are beautifully crafted from solid rosewood  and polished to enhance the natural colouring of the wood.

If you are looking for sash locks and tubular latches, we offer choices for interior and exterior doors, all compliant with British Standards. The fire rated tubular latches and mortice locks have passed certifire regulations. For easy shopping we offer door knobs and lever handles in sets that include tubular latch/sash lock/bathroom sash locks.

Hand Sourced Products

The real skill in supplying a great product is to find a high quality and passionate manufacturer. We have historically spent a great deal of time traveling aboard and forming working relationships with suppliers who understand our requirements. This is something we still continue to do. Our suppliers, both in the UK and in India, are skilled professionals. They use traditional ironmongery methods combined with modern technology to provide a high quality product.

The process of developing a product is time consuming. Typically, it takes approximately 12 months from the initial prototype product until we are ready to supply the finished item. Our attention to authentic detail and first hand familiarity of the application of our particular style of ironmongery make us a leading knowledge base in our industry.
