What Is Solid Bronze Hardware?

Bronze is a copper-based alloy traditionally used for architectural fittings, decorative metalwork and marine applications. Unlike a thin decorative plating applied over another metal, solid bronze has its colour and material character throughout the fitting.

Bronze is naturally resistant to corrosion, although this does not mean it will remain visually unchanged. Its surface reacts with handling, moisture and the surrounding environment, gradually developing a patina.

Because alloy composition, finish and product construction can vary, always check the individual listing before specifying a fitting for an external, coastal or otherwise exposed location.

Dark Bronze and White Bronze

The collection is available in two contrasting bronze tones:

• Dark or rustic bronze has a warm, deep brown appearance with copper-rich undertones. Frequently handled areas may gradually become lighter, revealing warmer highlights beneath the darker surface.
• White bronze has a lighter, silvery appearance created by its alloy composition and higher tin content. It may slowly deepen or mellow in tone as the surface matures.

Both are living finishes, so colour and texture can vary slightly between individual castings. Hardware installed in different rooms or exposed to different levels of handling may not age at exactly the same rate.

Selected solid bronze products are suitable for external doors and exposed environments because of the alloy’s corrosion resistance. Bronze Door Knobs

Our bronze door knobs include traditional and contemporary profiles with the reassuring weight and tactile feel associated with cast bronze.

Check whether the selected knob is designed for a mortice latch, mortice lock, rim lock or fixed-pull application. Door knobs normally require a suitable latch backset to provide enough clearance between the knob and door frame.

If a knob is being considered for an external entrance, confirm both its exterior suitability and compatibility with the required security lock.

Using Bronze Hardware Outdoors

Bronze does not rust in the same way as steel or cast iron, but it can oxidise, patinate and develop surface deposits. These changes are a natural characteristic of the material rather than evidence that it will remain maintenance-free.

For an external or coastal installation:

• Choose a product specifically described as suitable for exterior use
• Use the supplied or recommended compatible fixings
• Follow the product’s installation and maintenance instructions
• Remove salt and environmental deposits with a soft cloth as required
• Avoid harsh chemicals and abrasive cleaning materials
• Expect the finish to change more quickly than it would indoors

Exterior suitability does not automatically make a door fitting a security product. Locks, cylinders and related components must be selected separately according to the door and required security standard.

Caring for Bronze Hardware

For routine care, wipe bronze hardware with a soft dry or slightly damp cloth and then dry the surface. Avoid abrasive pads, aggressive cleaning sprays and unsuitable metal polishes, as these can scratch the fitting or alter the patina unevenly.

If you want the finish to age naturally, keep intervention to a minimum. If you prefer to restore or alter its appearance, follow the care advice for the specific product rather than applying a general-purpose polish without checking compatibility.
