What Is a Casement Window Fastener?

A casement window fastener is used to hold a compatible casement window in its closed position. Depending on the design, the fastener engages with a hook, keep or mortice plate fixed to the window frame.

Window fasteners are commonly used alongside Window Stays, which control and support the casement when the window is open.

Choosing the Right Window Fastener

Replacement fasteners can look similar while differing in their dimensions and fitting arrangement. Before ordering, compare the new fitting with the hardware and window construction already in place.

Check:

• whether the window is a timber casement window
• whether the fastener is handed or reversible
• the fixing positions and overall dimensions
• the type of keep, hook plate or mortice plate required
• whether the window has weather stripping
• whether a standard, locking or night-vent fastener is required

Use the individual product specification as the final reference for dimensions, handing, supplied components and compatibility.

Handed and Reversible Window Fasteners

Some window fasteners are supplied in separate left- and right-handed versions, while others are reversible and can be fitted to either side of the window.

Do not assume that two similar designs use the same handing arrangement. Where handing applies, select the version shown on the individual product page.

Hook Plates, Keeps and Mortice Plates

The receiving part of a casement fastener can vary according to the window construction. Some fittings are supplied with more than one plate option, while others are intended for a particular arrangement.

A hook plate may be suitable where the window and frame close flush, while a mortice plate can be used with compatible rebated window arrangements. Check the components supplied with each product before ordering or replacing an existing fastener.

Locking and Night-Vent Window Fasteners

The collection includes locking casement fasteners as well as standard non-locking designs. Some locking products use a small key or Allen key to operate the locking mechanism.

These fittings can provide an additional locking function, but the level and purpose of that function varies between products. Check the individual product information rather than assuming that every locking fastener is intended to provide the same level of window security.

Some night-vent fasteners are designed to lock in both the closed and partially open positions. Check the individual product specification for the locking arrangement, handing and intended application.

Fasteners for Weather-Stripped Windows

Windows fitted with weather seals can require a fastener designed to accommodate the different closing arrangement created by the weather stripping.

If your timber window has weather seals, check whether the product is specified for a standard or weather-stripped window before ordering.
