Choosing and Positioning Coat Hooks

Before ordering, consider the hook’s overall height, projection and mounting-plate dimensions. A deeper hook may hold heavy coats more securely but requires greater clearance in narrow hallways and behind doors.

When fitting several hooks, plan enough space between them for bulky clothing. Installing hooks at more than one height can make them easier for children to reach and provide separate positions for coats, hats and bags.

Check that a hook installed behind a door will not strike the wall, adjacent furniture or door hardware. A suitable door stop may be required to prevent damage.

Fixings and Weight Capacity

A hook is only as secure as its fixings and mounting surface. Solid timber generally provides the strongest base, while plasterboard, masonry and hollow doors require suitable specialist fixings.

Do not assume that the supplied screws are appropriate for every wall or door. Check for concealed pipes and electrical cables before drilling, and use fixings suited to both the surface and intended load.

Unless a tested load rating is provided, coat hooks should not be used as grab rails, climbing supports or safety equipment.

Bathroom and Utility-Room Hooks

Robe hooks can provide convenient storage for towels and dressing gowns in bathrooms and ensuites. However, moisture and condensation can affect some metals and finishes.

Check that the selected hook is suitable for a humid environment and avoid installing it where it will be exposed to continuous water spray. Wipe away moisture and follow the product’s finish-care instructions.

What Is a Cabin Hook?

A cabin hook is a simple hook-and-eye fitting used to hold a door, window, shutter or gate in a chosen position. It is commonly used to retain a door in the open position or prevent a lightweight gate or internal door from moving freely.

Cabin hooks are available in different lengths and finishes. The appropriate size depends on the distance between the moving door or gate and the surface to which the retaining eye will be fixed.

Using Cabin Hooks Outside

For exterior doors and gates, choose a cabin hook specifically described as suitable for outdoor use. Unprotected metals may rust or change appearance when exposed to rain, moisture and salt air.

A cabin hook can hold a gate or door in position, but it is not a security lock. It may also be unsuitable as the sole restraint for a heavy door in strong winds. Consider the weight, leverage and exposure of the door before installation.

Installing a Cabin Hook

Position the hook and retaining eye so they align without twisting or placing excessive strain on the fixings. Check that the door can reach the intended position and that the hook will not damage surrounding walls or joinery.

The fixing surface must be strong enough to withstand repeated movement and any force transferred through the door. Use appropriate exterior-grade fixings where required.

Care and Product Information

Clean hooks with a soft cloth and avoid abrasive pads or harsh chemical sprays. Black beeswax, unlacquered brass and other living finishes may naturally change through handling and exposure.
