Cast Iron and Black Coat Hooks

Cast iron coat hooks work particularly well in cottages, Victorian properties, farmhouse interiors and industrial-style rooms. Choose a black finish for stronger contrast or an antique iron finish for a more naturally aged appearance.

Cast iron is a ferrous material, so exterior or consistently damp use should not be assumed. Check the individual product listing before fitting a standard cast iron hook outside or in a location exposed to frequent moisture.

Brass and Bronze Coat Hooks

Brass coat hooks provide a warmer metallic finish and can be coordinated with nearby door knobs, cabinet hardware and bathroom accessories. Available finishes vary by design and include polished, satin, aged and antique options.

Can Coat Hooks Hold Mirrors or Picture Frames?

Do not assume that a decorative coat hook is suitable for hanging a mirror, picture frame or other suspended object. These items may require purpose-designed picture fixings selected according to their weight, hanging hardware and wall construction.

Use a coat hook only for applications supported by the product information. For heavier, fragile or overhead items, use an appropriate rated fixing and seek professional advice if necessary.

Choosing the Right Hook

Consider what will be hung, how frequently the hook will be used and where it will be installed. A small robe hook may suit towels or light garments, while bulky coats and bags may benefit from a larger hook or a design with more than one hanging point.

Check the hook’s height, projection, backplate dimensions and fixing positions. A hook with substantial projection needs enough clearance to avoid obstructing a walkway or striking a wall when fitted behind a door.

Installing Coat Hooks

• Fix hooks into sound timber or a suitably supported wall.
• Use fixings appropriate for the surface and expected load.
• Check for concealed pipes and electrical cables before drilling.
• Confirm that a door is thick and strong enough for the selected screws.
• Position hooks so hanging items do not obstruct handles, switches, sockets or doorways.
• If fitting several hooks, allow enough space between them for coats and other bulky items.

Supplied screws may not suit every wall, door or load. Choose alternative fixings where required for the installation surface.

Interior and Exterior Coat Hooks

Most decorative coat hooks should be treated as interior fittings unless the product page states otherwise. For exposed or exterior locations, choose a design specifically recommended for those conditions, such as a suitable Armor-Coat coat hook .

Caring for Coat Hooks

Wipe hooks with a soft, dry or slightly damp cloth. Avoid abrasive pads, metal polish and harsh cleaning sprays unless recommended for the particular material and finish.

Check the fixings periodically, especially on frequently used hallway and cloakroom hooks. Tighten loose fixings carefully and investigate any movement in the wall, door or mounting surface.
