Fanlight Catches

Our fanlight window catches provide a traditional fastening for bottom-hung, inward-opening fanlight windows. Each catch has a ring pull that can be reached with a suitable pole hook, making it particularly useful on high-level windows that cannot be operated comfortably by hand.

Choose from solid-brass and traditional steel or brass designs in finishes including aged brass, polished brass, satin brass, polished chrome, satin nickel, matt bronze, black, beeswax, lacquered brass and pewter patina. The available material and finish depend on the individual product.

Fanlight catches are supplied with two keepers to accommodate flush or recessed fitting arrangements. Check the product dimensions and your window’s opening direction before ordering, as these catches are designed for inward-opening windows.

What Is a Fanlight Catch?

A fanlight catch is a surface-mounted fastener traditionally used on a small bottom-hung window positioned above a door or larger window. It holds the window closed and incorporates a loop or ring that can be operated using a pole hook when the window is out of reach.

Selected fanlight catches may also be suitable for loft hatches or cupboard doors. Always check the individual product description, dimensions and fixing arrangement before using a catch for an alternative application.

Choosing the Correct Fanlight Catch

Before ordering, check the following:

  • That the window is bottom-hung and opens inwards
  • Whether the catch and keeper will be fitted at flush or recessed levels
  • That there is sufficient room for the catch plate and keeper
  • Whether the ring can be reached directly or requires a pole hook
  • That the selected finish coordinates with your other window furniture

Technical drawings and exact measurements are available on the individual product listings. Compare these measurements with the timber frame and existing fixing position before placing your order.

Flush and Recessed Window Fitting

Each catch is supplied with two alternative keepers. One is intended for a flush fitting, where the window and frame meet at approximately the same level. The other accommodates a recessed arrangement where the two fitting surfaces are offset.

Only the appropriate keeper is required during installation. The correct option will depend on the construction and profile of your window frame.

Fanlight Catch Materials and Finishes

The collection contains more than one fanlight-catch design, so the base material varies. Selected catches are manufactured from solid brass, while other traditional designs are made from steel or brass according to the finish.

Current finish options across the collection include:

  • Aged brass
  • Polished brass
  • Satin brass
  • Matt bronze
  • Polished chrome
  • Satin nickel
  • Black
  • Beeswax
  • Lacquered brass
  • Pewter patina

Finish availability differs between designs. Where exact coordination is important, compare the product range, base material and stated finish rather than relying on the finish name alone.

Operating High-Level Fanlight Windows

The ring pull allows an elevated catch to be operated with a traditional pole hook. Make sure the pole is long enough to reach the window safely without standing on furniture or overstretching.

For windows requiring more controlled opening, explore our wider fanlight window furniture, which includes stays and screw openers for compatible window arrangements.

Matching Window Furniture

For coordinating hardware on traditional timber windows, browse our sash window furniture and brass casement window furniture.

These collections include window stays, fasteners, sash fittings and other hardware in finishes that can be matched or coordinated with your chosen fanlight catch.
