Heritage Brass Casement Window Fasteners

A casement window fastener is fitted to an opening sash and engages with a compatible plate or keep on the frame. Operating the handle draws the sash towards the frame and holds it in its closed position.

Locking versions may be useful where restricted operation is preferred, but they should not be assumed to meet a particular security or insurance standard unless that performance is explicitly stated.

Check whether keys are supplied, how the lock operates and whether the fastener is appropriate for the intended window and location.

Fasteners for Weather-Stripped Windows

Weather-stripped timber windows can have a different frame profile from traditional flush casements. A standard fastener or keep may not bridge the additional rebate or seal correctly.

• The spindle size and length
• The distance between the fixing screws
• The direction and angle of handle movement
• The available space around the handle base
• The condition of the existing locking mechanism

A surface fastener and an espagnolette handle are not normally interchangeable without changing the window mechanism.

Unlacquered Brass Window Fasteners

Selected ball-end and espagnolette fasteners are available in unlacquered brass. This unsealed surface responds to handling and its surroundings by developing a natural patina.

The brass may gradually darken, with frequently touched areas changing differently from the rest of the fitting. Follow the product-specific care instructions and avoid polishing if you want to preserve the naturally aged appearance.

Replacing an Existing Window Fastener

Record the old fastener’s position and measure its baseplate, fixing centres, projection and keep before removal. Check whether the replacement will cover previous screw holes or marks.

Older timber windows may have moved or become misaligned over time. Make sure the sash closes correctly before installing new hardware; the fastener should not be used to force a distorted window into position.

Position the fastener and keep together with the sash fully closed. Both components must align so the handle operates smoothly and draws the window against the frame without excessive force.
