What Is a Pocket Door Edge Pull?

A pocket door edge pull is fitted into the leading or closing edge of a sliding door. When the door is pushed fully inside its wall pocket, the face-mounted handles may no longer be accessible. The edge pull gives you a finger grip for drawing the door back out.

Most edge pulls are recessed or morticed into the door edge to retain a streamlined appearance. Retractable designs fold or spring back into their faceplate when released, allowing the door to close or enter its pocket without a permanently projecting handle.

When Do You Need an Edge Pull?

An edge pull is useful when:

• The door slides completely into a wall pocket
• The face-mounted flush pulls become inaccessible when the door is open
• A projecting handle would catch on the pocket cassette or wall
• You want to retrieve the door using a fitting concealed within its edge

An edge pull may not be necessary if part of the door always remains outside the pocket and its flush pull stays accessible. Consider the door’s fully open position before deciding which fittings are required.

Retractable Edge Pulls

A retractable edge pull contains a finger grip that extends from the faceplate when needed and returns into the door edge when released. This helps maintain the clearance required for the door to slide into its pocket.

Check the extended projection as well as the recessed dimensions. The grip must provide enough space for comfortable use while returning fully into its faceplate when not required.

Round Finger Pulls

Round finger pulls provide a compact grip for sliding doors. Depending on the particular design, they may be fitted into the door edge or used as a small recessed pull on the door face.

Confirm the intended fitting position in the individual product description. A face-mounted finger pull does not necessarily perform the same function as a retractable pull installed in the closing edge.

Edge Pulls vs Flush Pull Handles

Although both fittings are recessed, they serve different purposes:

• Flush pull handles are fitted to one or both broad faces of the door and are used for normal opening and closing.
• Edge pulls are installed into the narrow closing edge and are principally used to retrieve the door from its pocket.

A complete pocket-door installation may require a pair of face-mounted flush pulls and a separate edge pull. For a bathroom or bedroom, compatible privacy-lock components may also be required.

Edge Pulls for Bathrooms and Cloakrooms

Edge pulls can be used on sliding doors serving bathrooms, en-suites, cloakrooms and bedrooms, but the edge pull itself does not lock the door or provide privacy.

For a room requiring privacy, pair the pull with a suitable sliding or pocket door lock set. Check that the lock case and edge pull can both fit within the door edge without their mortices overlapping.

What to Measure Before Ordering

Edge pulls are not universally interchangeable. Before ordering, check:

• The overall height and width or diameter of the faceplate
• The size and depth of the required door-edge recess
• The door thickness
• The width and construction of the door’s closing stile
• The fixing-centre dimensions
• The finger pull’s projection when extended
• The clearance available inside the wall pocket
• The position of any lock case, guide or other door hardware

Materials and Finishes

Selected edge pulls are manufactured from solid brass, while material construction varies across the wider range. Available finishes may include:

• Aged and antique brass
• Satin and polished brass
• Matt and aged bronze
• Polished bronze
• Polished chrome
• Satin chrome
• Polished nickel
• Satin nickel
• Matt black
• Pewter

Some living finishes, such as unlacquered antique brass, will change naturally through handling and exposure. Refer to the individual product listing for exact material and care information.

Quantities and Supplied Fixings

Edge pulls are generally sold singly because only one is normally needed on the closing edge of each pocket door. Selected products are supplied with matching wood screws, but the fixing material and product contents vary.

Confirm whether the chosen listing includes the pull, screws and any required internal components before ordering. Face-mounted flush pulls, privacy locks and hanging hardware are normally separate unless explicitly included in a set.

Installing an Edge Pull

Installation normally requires a neat mortice to be cut into the narrow edge of the door. The recess must be correctly positioned and deep enough for the faceplate and mechanism without weakening the door or interfering with another fitting.

Before cutting:

• Mark the fully open and closed door positions
• Check the internal construction of the door
• Confirm clearance inside the pocket cassette
• Check the position of any privacy lock
• Use the product’s technical drawing as the template

If the door forms part of a fire-rated assembly, only use approved components and installation methods compatible with that doorset.
