What Is a Flush Pull Handle?

A flush pull is recessed into the face of a door, drawer or cabinet panel. Unlike a projecting handle, it allows a sliding door to pass alongside another panel or enter a wall pocket without the handle obstructing its movement.

Flush pulls are commonly used on:

• Sliding internal doors
• Pocket doors concealed inside a wall
• Bypass and overlapping doors
• Fitted wardrobes
• Cupboard and cabinet doors
• Selected drawers and furniture panels

A standard flush pull provides a grip only. It does not include a latch or privacy function unless the product is specifically described as a lock set.

Rectangular and Reeded Flush Pulls

Flush Pulls for Pocket Doors

A pocket door slides into a cavity inside the wall, so its face fittings must have minimal projection. Check that the selected pull will clear the pocket cassette, internal framework, brushes and other components when the door is fully opened.

If the entire leading edge enters the pocket, you may also need an edge pull. This is fitted into the closing edge of the door and allows it to be retrieved when the face-mounted pulls are no longer accessible.

Flush Pulls for Wardrobes and Cabinets

Smaller flush and ring pulls can provide an unobtrusive handle for fitted wardrobes, cupboard doors, drawers and freestanding furniture. Check that the panel is thick enough to accept the required recess without the cutter breaking through the opposite face.

For cabinetry, also consider the weight of the door or drawer and the amount of grip required. A compact finger pull may suit a lightweight cupboard but may be less comfortable on a large or heavy sliding panel.

• The projection after installation
• The position of any glazing, rails, stiles or internal door framework
• The available clearance inside a pocket or behind an overlapping door
• Whether one pull or a pair is required

Use the technical drawing for the selected product rather than cutting the door from its overall dimensions alone.

Many standalone flush pull handles are made from solid brass and supplied singly with matching wood screws. Privacy lock sets and other accessories may contain steel, zinc alloy, plastic or additional functional components.

Installing a Recessed Flush Pull

Installing a flush pull requires a recess to be routed, drilled or carefully chiselled into the door. The recess should be deep enough for the pull to sit correctly but must not weaken the panel or break through the opposite face.

For pocket doors, installation should be planned before the door is hung and before the wall cavity is permanently closed. Ensure the handle does not project far enough to catch on the cassette or internal pocket components.

If fitting a pull to a fire-rated door, use only approved hardware and installation methods compatible with that doorset.
