Heritage Brass Door Hinges

Heritage Brass door hinges support the door and allow it to open and close within its frame. Although they are partly concealed when a door is closed, the hinge knuckle remains visible and can be coordinated with the handles, locks and other door fittings.

The appropriate hinge depends on several factors, including the door dimensions, weight, thickness, construction and frequency of use. Check the individual product specification rather than choosing by finish alone.

Internal Door Hinges

Internal door hinges can be used on suitable bedroom, living-room, kitchen, bathroom and hallway doors. When selecting hinges for an existing door, first identify the hinge type and record the dimensions of the current fittings.

Important measurements include:

  • The height and overall width of the open hinge
  • The width and thickness of each hinge leaf
  • The depth of the existing recesses
  • The position of the screw holes
  • The door thickness, dimensions and approximate weight

A replacement hinge that differs in size or leaf thickness may require the door and frame recesses to be adjusted. Existing screw holes must also remain sound enough to provide a secure fixing.

Washered Butt Hinges

The collection includes washered butt hinges, a traditional hinge design with two leaves that are normally recessed into the edge of the door and its frame. When the door is closed, the leaves sit between the two surfaces while the knuckle remains visible.

Washers positioned between the moving hinge knuckles help separate the bearing surfaces during operation. Review the product page for the exact hinge construction, materials and intended application.

Butt hinges must be installed accurately so that both leaves sit correctly within their recesses. Poor alignment can affect the movement of the door and place unnecessary strain on the hinges, screws and frame.

Three-Inch and Four-Inch Door Hinges

Selected Heritage Brass hinges are available in three-inch and four-inch sizes. Hinge size should be chosen according to the door specification rather than solely by matching the dimensions of an old fitting.

Larger or heavier doors may require a different size, quantity or performance classification from a standard lightweight internal door. Always check the product information and the requirements of the door manufacturer or installer.

Brass Door Hinges and Coordinating Finishes

Heritage Brass hinges are available in selected brass, bronze, chrome and nickel finishes. Options may include aged, polished or satin appearances, depending on the hinge size and design.

For the closest visual match, select hinges and visible door furniture from the same Heritage Brass finish family. Minor variations can occur between different materials, product types and manufacturing processes.

Review the care instructions before using metal polish or chemical cleaning products, as these may alter or damage some decorative finishes.

How Many Hinges Does a Door Need?

The required number of hinges depends on the door’s height, width, weight, construction and intended use. It can also be affected by the hinge specification, frame material and applicable fire or building requirements.

Do not assume that the number already fitted to an old door will automatically be suitable for a new installation. Follow the door and hinge manufacturers’ guidance or consult a suitably experienced installer.

Replacing Existing Door Hinges

Before removing an existing hinge, measure its dimensions and record its position on the door and frame. Check whether the replacement will fit the existing recess and whether its screw-hole arrangement differs.

The door should be supported during removal and installation. Hinges must be aligned so the door moves freely without binding, dropping or making unwanted contact with the frame or floor.

Fire Doors and Heavier Doors

Fire doors, entrance doors and unusually heavy doors may require hinges with specific testing, certification or load ratings. A decorative finish does not confirm that a hinge is suitable for these applications.

Check the complete door specification and use only appropriately rated hinges and fixings. Seek professional advice where fire performance, accessibility, security or regulatory compliance is involved.
