Heritage Brass Bathroom Door Locks

A bathroom door lock is fitted inside the door and provides a privacy-locking function separate from the main latch operation. Depending on the hardware arrangement, the latch may be operated by a lever handle while a separate thumbturn controls the privacy bolt.

The lock must be compatible with the selected handles, turn-and-release set and door preparation. Before ordering, check:

• The lock case height, width and depth
• The backset from the door edge
• The centres between the handle spindle and privacy spindle
• The faceplate and strike-plate dimensions
• The door thickness and opening direction
• The required spindle sizes
• Whether the lock is supplied separately or as part of a set

Bathroom Turns and Releases

A bathroom turn and release consists of two coordinated fittings. The thumbturn is positioned on the inside of the bathroom or WC door, where it operates the privacy lock. The release is fitted externally and allows the lock to be opened from outside when required.

The release is intended for privacy and emergency access rather than normal key locking. Bathroom turns should not be treated as security locks or used where key-controlled access is required.

Check that the privacy spindle supplied or specified for the turn is compatible with the bathroom lock and long enough for the door thickness.

Round Bathroom Thumbturns

Round bathroom turns and releases offer a versatile shape that can complement circular handle roses and traditional door knobs. Available options include plain, reeded and knurled designs.

Consider how easily the turn can be gripped and operated, as well as how its diameter and projection relate to the surrounding handle and door furniture.

Square Bathroom Turns

Square turn-and-release sets can be paired with square handle roses and more geometric door furniture. Standard and low-profile designs are available across selected Heritage Brass finishes.

Square fittings must be aligned accurately before the fixing screws are tightened. Even a slight rotation can be more noticeable than with a round rose.

Oval Bathroom Turns and Releases

Oval thumbturns provide a shaped grip that can be comfortable to operate while retaining a relatively compact appearance. The live collection includes rounded and low-profile oval designs.

Check the complete dimensions and available clearance around the turn. A low-profile rose may sit close to the door, but the thumbturn itself still needs sufficient space to rotate freely.

Knurled and Reeded Thumbturns

Knurled and reeded bathroom turns add surface texture to the fitting. These details can complement related Heritage Brass handles, knobs and cabinet furniture.

Decorative texture does not determine compatibility. Confirm the spindle, rose, fixing and lock requirements in the same way as for a plain turn-and-release set.

Tubular Bathroom Lock Sets

Selected products combine a tubular bathroom lock with a coordinating round or square privacy turn and release. A combined set can simplify product matching, but the dimensions must still suit the door and handle arrangement.

Check exactly what is supplied. Lever handles, hinges and other door furniture may need to be ordered separately even when the bathroom lock and privacy turn are sold together.

Choosing Compatible Bathroom Door Handles

A handle on rose is commonly combined with a separate bathroom turn positioned below it. Choose a turn-and-release design that complements the handle rose without obstructing either fitting.

Do not add a separate turn and release to a backplate handle unless the handle and lock arrangement specifically require it.

Replacing Existing Bathroom Door Hardware

Measure the existing handle, lock and thumbturn before removing them. Record the backset, handle-to-turn centres, faceplate dimensions, spindle sizes and fixing positions.

Replacement hardware with different centres may require alterations to the door. Make sure any new roses or backplates cover old holes without interfering with the lock case.

Installing Bathroom Locks and Thumbturns

The turn, release and lock must align so the privacy bolt moves smoothly without excessive force. Cut the spindle to the correct length only where the product instructions permit it.

Test the external release before the room is put into use. The door should latch, lock and release correctly from both sides without the fittings rubbing against the door surface.

Accessibility and Emergency Release

Choose a thumbturn that the intended users can grip and operate comfortably. Where accessibility requirements apply, check that the complete handle and locking arrangement meets the relevant specification.

The external release must remain accessible and should not be obstructed by other hardware. Confirm how it is operated and keep any required release tool available where appropriate.
