Explore our collection of square escutcheons, designed to provide a neat finish around door keyholes and lock cylinders. These decorative keyhole cover plates help conceal the lock cut-out and protect painted or timber doors from everyday marks and key scratches.

Choose from British Standard and Euro-profile escutcheons in standard, low-profile and decorative designs. Available materials and finishes include solid brass, forged iron, bronze and marine-grade stainless steel, with options to complement lever handles on square roses and matching door furniture.

Selected square escutcheons are suitable for external doors, while others are intended primarily for interior use. Pack quantities, fixing types and exterior suitability vary, so please check the individual product specification before ordering.

What Is a Square Escutcheon?

A square escutcheon is a metal plate fitted around a door keyhole or cylinder. In addition to providing a decorative finishing touch, it covers the cut-out made for the lock and helps protect the surrounding door surface from wear.

The geometric shape is particularly well suited to contemporary interiors and door handles on square roses. Traditional and hand-forged designs can also work well in industrial, rustic and period properties.

British Standard Square Escutcheons

A British Standard escutcheon has a traditional keyhole-shaped opening. It is designed for compatible lever locks, including suitable 3-lever and 5-lever sash locks or deadlocks.

Our Square Brass Standard Escutcheon has a 54mm square plate, concealed fixings and a choice of coordinating brass and plated finishes. It is suitable for both internal and external doors.

Square Euro-Profile Escutcheons

A Euro-profile escutcheon is shaped to fit around a Euro cylinder rather than a traditional lever-lock keyhole. Euro cylinders are commonly used with Euro sash locks, Euro deadlocks and multipoint locking systems.

The Square Brass Euro Escutcheon is designed for Euro cylinder locks and has concealed fixings for a clean, contemporary appearance.

British Standard and Euro profiles are not interchangeable. Check the shape and type of your lock before selecting an escutcheon.

Standard and Low-Profile Designs

Standard square escutcheons provide a more substantial frame around the lock opening. Low-profile versions have a slimmer plate and sit more discreetly against the door, making them a good choice for minimal interiors.

When comparing designs, check the overall plate dimensions, thickness, profile opening and fixing arrangement. These details are available on the individual product pages and technical drawings.

Finishes for Square Escutcheons

Available finishes include:

  • Aged, antique, polished and satin brass
  • Matt bronze, aged bronze and polished bronze
  • Polished chrome, satin chrome and satin nickel
  • Black, matt black and external beeswax
  • Pewter and contemporary TUPAI finishes
  • Satin and polished marine-grade stainless steel

For the closest match, choose escutcheons and door handles from the same coordinated product range. Finish names can vary between manufacturers, and similarly named finishes may have slightly different colours or textures.

Exposed and Concealed Fixings

Concealed-fixing escutcheons hide the mounting screws behind the outer plate, creating a clean and uninterrupted appearance. Other designs use visible screws as part of their traditional or hand-forged character.

Some low-profile models are screwed directly onto the door. Always follow the instructions supplied with the selected product and check that its fixing method is compatible with your door and lock.

Are Square Escutcheons Sold Singly or in Pairs?

Pack quantities vary. Many of the solid-brass square escutcheons are sold singly, allowing you to order the exact number required. Selected products, including certain TUPAI square escutcheons, are supplied as pairs with a fixing kit.

Check the pack size on the product listing before ordering, particularly if you require an escutcheon on both sides of the door.

Square Escutcheons for External Doors

Selected solid-brass and exterior-grade escutcheons are suitable for front and external doors. However, exterior suitability should not be assumed across the whole collection because it depends on the base material, finish and protective coating.

For exposed or coastal properties, choose a product that is specifically described as suitable for those conditions. Marine-grade stainless steel and selected solid-bronze designs provide greater corrosion resistance, but the individual care and installation guidance should still be followed.

Do Escutcheons Improve Door Security?

A standard square escutcheon primarily provides a decorative and protective finish. It should not be treated as security hardware unless the product is specifically designed and tested to protect the lock or cylinder.

The security of an external door depends on the complete installation, including the lock, cylinder, door, frame and protective furniture.

Choosing the Correct Square Escutcheon

Before ordering, check:

  • Whether your lock requires a British Standard or Euro profile
  • The overall dimensions and thickness of the plate
  • Whether the escutcheon has exposed or concealed fixings
  • Whether one escutcheon or a pair is supplied
  • Whether it is approved for internal or external use
  • Whether its finish matches your handles and other door furniture

Caring for Square Escutcheons

Remove dirt and water marks with a soft cloth. Avoid abrasive pads, metal cleaners and aerosol sprays unless the individual care instructions permit them, as these products may damage lacquered, plated or painted finishes.
