Carl Benson: The Founder of Suffolk Latch Company

Carl Benson: Founder of Suffolk Latch Company

Carl Benson began his working life in engineering, initially training as a welder before going on to gain an HNC in Mechanical Engineering. At the age of 29, he took the leap into self-employment, designing and manufacturing bespoke furniture for the retail sector.

Around 20 years ago, Carl founded Suffolk Latch Company from a small workshop in the village of Clare, nestled on the Essex–Suffolk border.

What began as a small-scale venture has grown into a respected name in architectural ironmongery, offering a curated collection of quality door, window and cabinet hardware.

Over the years, Carl has built close relationships with both established UK wholesalers and a talented group of manufacturers.

Through years of collaboration and mutual trust, they have developed a series of exclusive designs unique to Suffolk Latch Company.

These long-standing partnerships go far beyond typical supplier relationships. Carl considers his manufacturing colleagues more like extended family, united by a shared dedication to producing quality ironmongery.

In spring 2025, Carl and his wife, Sharon, passed the company into the capable hands of their daughter and son-in-law, Charlotte and Andrew, who now lead the business into its next chapter.

Despite the transition, Carl remains fully involved day to day, contributing his knowledge, experience and passion for honest, well-made hardware.
