How to Measure and Replace Internal Door Handles

Introduction

To replace internal door handles, first record the door thickness, spindle, fixing positions and existing latch or lock. Compare these with the replacement’s drawing and fitting instructions before ordering. Matching the appearance or backplate length alone does not establish whether a new handle will fit.

This guide covers lever handles on internal timber doors with a conventional latch or mortice lock. Multipoint locking systems need a separate assessment.

Record the Existing Arrangement

Photograph both handles and the door edge before dismantling anything. Note whether the door has a plain latch, key-operated lock or bathroom turn and release. Record any manufacturer’s name or model marking.

With the door open, check how each handle operates. Note stiffness, looseness or failure to return: these may involve the latch, fixings or alignment, not just the handle.

Some measurements are hidden. If necessary, carefully remove a cover or handle following its instructions, record what is underneath, then refit it while awaiting replacements.

Copy this checklist into your notes. Record measurements in millimetres and compare them with the exact replacement model, including its function and fixing arrangement.

Can You Keep the Existing Latch?

Keep it if it is serviceable and the replacement handles are compatible with its spindle opening, return mechanism and fixing paths. Unsprung handles need suitable return support; a latch that worked with one handle is not automatically suitable for another.

Choose a Compatible Replacement

A like-for-like replacement matches the working parts and fixings, not simply the finish. A larger backplate may cover old marks, but it cannot correct incompatible spindle dimensions or provide sound fixing material where timber is damaged.

For example, Warwick handles on backplate have latch, lock and bathroom options, with a drawing under Dimensions. Compare the correct option with your notes; one version’s appearance does not establish that another will fit.

Changing from a long backplate to a small rose may expose holes or unfinished timber. Resolve any repair and new fixing requirements before buying.

Replace the Handles Step by Step

1. Prepare and secure the door

Hold the door open with a wedge. Have the fitting instructions, suitable screwdrivers, any specified hex key and your measurements ready. Protect the floor and keep removed parts together.

2. Remove the existing handles

Identify the cover and retaining arrangement first: covers may unscrew or unclip, depending on the design. Support both handles while releasing their fixings and any retaining grub screws. Withdraw the handle and spindle without forcing them.

3. Compare before making new holes

Offer up the new mounting parts and check alignment, coverage and sound timber for the fixings. If replacing the latch, complete that work using the exact model’s instructions and our latch-fitting guide. Do not force a different mechanism into the old opening.

4. Fit the spindle and handles

Follow the specified spindle orientation and engagement requirements. Check the required length against both handles; copying the old bar’s length may be wrong. Keep the handles aligned while securing the supplied fixings, avoiding overtightening.

For bolt-through designs, confirm that the latch or lock permits the bolt paths. Use our bolt-through fitting guide alongside the product instructions. Never drill through the mechanism.

5. Test before closing

Operate both handles repeatedly with the door open. Confirm that the latch retracts fully, returns freely and neither handle binds. Test any key or bathroom turn and outside release while open.

Only then close the door gently and check engagement with the striker plate. Stop if operation changes; check alignment before adjusting or removing timber.
