What Is a Cast Iron Rim Lock?

A rim lock is a surface-mounted lock case fitted to one face of a door. Unlike a mortice lock, which is recessed into the door edge, most of the rim-lock mechanism remains visible when installed.

This makes a cast iron rim lock particularly well suited to ledge and brace doors, traditional joinery and period interiors where visible ironmongery forms part of the room’s character.

The lock operates a latch using the door knobs. Keyed versions also include a privacy bolt operated with a key, while the bathroom model uses a separate internal locking snib.

Choose a Small, Large or Bathroom Rim Lock

• Small Cast Iron Rim Locks provide a more compact surface-mounted lock for internal doors where space or visual scale is a consideration.
• Large Cast Iron Rim Locks create a stronger visual feature on substantial timber doors and traditional joinery.
• Cast Iron Bathroom Rim Locks include a deadbolt operated by a solid brass locking snib positioned along the top of the rim-lock case.

Compare the product dimensions with the available door area before choosing between the small and large versions. The larger lock is not automatically the correct option for every full-size door.

Keyed and Bathroom Rim Locks

The small and large keyed rim locks allow an internal door to be locked for privacy. They are not high-security locks and are not suitable for external entrance doors or other locations requiring security-rated hardware.

The bathroom rim lock provides keyless privacy from inside the room. Its locking snib operates a separate deadbolt within the surface-mounted case.

These products are intended for internal doors. For an external door, use a lock specifically designed and rated for the required security, weather exposure and insurance conditions.

Understanding Left- and Right-Handed Rim Locks

These cast iron rim locks are handed rather than reversible. You must select the correct left- or right-handed version for the direction in which the door opens and the side on which the lock will be fitted.

As stated in the product guidance, an inward-opening door hinged on the left requires the corresponding left-handed rim lock. However, door handing can be described differently between manufacturers, so compare your door with the handing diagram supplied on the product page before ordering.

Do not determine handing from the room name alone. Check the hinge position, opening direction and the face of the door on which the rim-lock case will sit.

Rim Lock and Door Knob Sets

The rim locks can be ordered by themselves or as coordinated door knob sets. Complete sets include a pair of suitable door knobs and a matching escutcheon. Keyed models also include keys, while supplied components vary by product.

Door knob choices include traditional wooden designs in rosewood or ebonised finishes, solid brass knobs in coordinating metallic finishes, and black or pewter-effect cast iron options.

Check the selected product variant carefully before ordering. Choosing “rim lock only” will not include the complete door knob set.

Choosing Door Knobs for a Rim Lock

Rim locks require compatible door knobs that can operate the spindle through the lock case. Knob size, projection and clearance from the door frame should all be considered.

Your hand needs sufficient space between the knob and the frame to turn it comfortably. This is particularly important where the lock is fitted close to deep architraves or other projecting joinery.

A matching escutcheon provides a finished appearance around the keyhole on the opposite face of keyed doors. Bathroom models do not use the same key-operated privacy arrangement.

What to Check Before Ordering

• Confirm whether you need a keyed or bathroom privacy lock.
• Select the correct left- or right-handed version.
• Compare the lock-case dimensions with the available door area.
• Check the spindle position and clearance from the door frame.
• Confirm whether you are ordering the lock only or a complete knob set.
• Check which knobs, escutcheons, keys, keepers and fixings are included with the selected variant.
• Make sure the door and frame are suitable for a surface-mounted lock.

Installing a Cast Iron Rim Lock

The lock case is fitted to the face of the door, with a keeper fixed to the frame. Accurate alignment is essential so the latch and bolt enter the keeper without binding.

Holes are also required for the spindle and, on keyed models, the key. Check the supplied template, technical drawing and fitting instructions before drilling the door.

If you are unsure about handing, positioning or modifying a period door, consider using an experienced joiner or ironmonger.

Caring for Cast Iron Rim Locks

Wipe the lock case and door furniture with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid abrasive pads, metal polish and harsh cleaning sprays that could damage lacquered, plated, wooden or applied finishes.

Do not force a stiff key, knob or locking snib. Check the door alignment, keeper position and fixings first, as movement in the door or frame can prevent the mechanism operating correctly.
