What Is a Solid Brass Rim Lock?

A rim lock is a traditional lock case fitted to the surface of a door rather than morticed into the door edge. The lock case remains visible when the door is closed, while a matching keeper is fitted to the door frame.

Our solid brass versions offer a reassuring weight and a traditional appearance. They are three-lever locks designed for privacy on internal doors rather than high-security applications.

Large, Small and Bathroom Rim Locks

The collection includes three principal rim lock styles:

• Large solid brass rim locks, which create a more prominent feature on traditionally proportioned internal doors.
• Small solid brass rim locks, suitable where a more compact lock case is required.
• Solid brass bathroom rim locks, designed to provide privacy on internal bathroom and cloakroom doors.

Choose the size by checking the product dimensions against your door rather than relying on the large or small description alone. The proportions of the lock case, its backset and the position of existing fixing holes can all affect compatibility.

Choosing the Correct Handing

Selected solid brass rim locks are handed, so you will need to choose the correct left- or right-hand version for your door. Check which side the hinges are on, which way the door opens and which face of the door will hold the lock case.

Handing conventions can vary between products. Follow the handing diagram on the individual product listing before ordering rather than selecting solely from a general left- or right-opening description.

What to Measure Before Ordering

Before choosing a rim lock, check the following measurements and fitting details:

• The overall width, height and depth of the lock case
• The backset from the door edge to the knob spindle
• The position of the keyhole or bathroom privacy control
• The size and position of the keeper on the door frame
• The thickness of the door and required spindle length
• The clearance needed for the door knobs to turn comfortably
• The handing and opening direction of the door
• Any existing holes or marks that the new lock needs to cover

Rim Lock Only or Complete Knob Set?

Selected designs are available as a rim lock only or as a coordinated set with matching door knobs. The large and small rim locks are supplied with a matching keeper, two keys, an escutcheon and appropriate fixing screws. Complete sets also include a pair of compatible rim lock door knobs.

Package contents and bathroom locking components can vary, so check the individual listing before ordering. If fitting a bathroom lock, also confirm whether the selected design provides the type of external emergency access required for your household.

Internal Privacy Rather Than External Security

These three-lever rim locks are designed for internal doors where privacy or traditional appearance is required. They are not suitable as the primary security lock on a front door, back door or other external entrance.

External doors should be fitted with a suitably specified and tested security lock appropriate to the door construction and insurance requirements.

How Unlacquered Brass Ages

Because the brass is not protected by a clear lacquer, its appearance will change naturally. The surface may darken and develop variations in colour, while frequently handled areas can remain brighter or become polished through use.

This changing appearance is known as a living finish and is an intentional characteristic of unlacquered brass. Clean the surface with a soft cloth and avoid abrasive pads or harsh chemical cleaners unless you deliberately want to remove the developing patina.

Matching Door Knobs and Hinges

Complete the door with compatible polished brass door knobs, keyhole escutcheons and butt hinges.

When purchasing knobs separately, check that they are suitable for a surface-mounted rim lock and have the correct spindle and rose arrangement. A standard mortice door knob set may not be directly compatible.
