Cottage Latches

Cottage Latches

Cottage latches are a traditional surface-mounted latch often found on older timber doors, cottages and period-style interiors. Recognised by their distinctive lift-and-release mechanism, these latches provide a simple and familiar operation that suits both restoration projects and new joinery with a traditional feel. Our collection includes cast iron cottage latches in black beeswax and pewter finishes, each offered in left and right hand versions. Although cast rather than hand forged, their finish and texture blend naturally with our wider traditional range. The Tudor cottage latch adds an additional option suitable for both internal and external doors. For matching hardware throughout your home, explore our wider Traditional Door Hardware collection.

Black Beeswax Cottage Latches

Our black beeswax cottage latches offer a traditional textured appearance suited to darker timber or rustic-style interiors. These are cast iron latches with a beeswax coating suitable for internal use. Choose between the right hand cottage latch in black beeswax or the left hand cottage latch in black beeswax depending on the required handing.

Pewter Cottage Latches

The pewter cottage latch provides the same cast iron construction with a softer metallic finish that works well with lighter timber or painted internal doors. As with all cottage latches, handing is required. Options include the right hand cottage latch in pewter and the left hand cottage latch in pewter.

Handing Guide

Cottage latches are handed based on which side of the door the thumb piece is positioned when pulling the door open towards you. If you are unsure which handing you require, our Cottage Latch Handing Guide provides clear illustrations and can be downloaded directly from this link.

Tudor Cottage Latches

For doors requiring a latch suitable for both internal and external applications, the Tudor cottage latch offers increased durability while keeping the same traditional operation. Available as the right hand Tudor cottage latch or the left hand Tudor cottage latch, this option provides a reliable choice for garden gates, outbuildings and exposed locations while maintaining a traditional appearance.
