Door Letter Plates & Tidies

Shop Heritage Brass door letter plates and tidies from M-Marcus for front doors and entranceways. The collection includes brass letter plates, gravity flaps, decorative designs and matching internal tidies in a choice of coordinated finishes.

A front door letter plate—often referred to as a door letterbox—provides an opening for incoming post. A compatible letter plate tidy covers the aperture on the inside of the door, creating a neater internal finish.

Heritage Brass Door Letter Plates

Heritage Brass door letter plates combine a functional postal opening with a decorative external fitting. They can be used when replacing an existing letter plate or planning the hardware layout for a suitable new entrance door.

The collection includes traditional, reeded, embossed and more contemporary designs. Selected products are also available with an integrated door knocker, combining two pieces of front door furniture in one fitting.

Before ordering, check:

  • The overall external dimensions
  • The required aperture width and height
  • The distance between the fixing centres
  • The door thickness and fixing-bolt length
  • The space required for the flap to open
  • Compatibility with an internal letter tidy
  • Suitability for the door material and location

Brass Letter Plates

Brass letter plates bring a warm metallic detail to painted and natural timber doors. Depending on the product, available appearances may include polished, satin, aged or unlacquered brass.

The finish should be selected alongside other visible entrance hardware, such as the door knocker, centre knob and house numbers. Choosing fittings from the same Heritage Brass finish family will generally provide the closest visual match.

Unlacquered brass is intended to respond to handling and exterior conditions by developing a natural patina. Other brass finishes may have a protective coating and require different care, so always follow the individual product instructions.

Gravity Letter Plates

A gravity letter plate uses the weight and movement of its flap to return it towards the closed position after use. The exact mechanism, opening angle and fitting requirements vary between designs.

Make sure the flap can open freely without catching against the door, surrounding mouldings or an internal tidy. The fitting should be installed level so that its closing action is not affected by poor alignment.

Letter Plates with Door Knockers

A combined letter plate and door knocker can be useful where the available door space is limited or where a unified traditional design is preferred. Because both functions share one fitting, accurate positioning is especially important.

Check that the knocker remains at a comfortable operating height while the letter aperture is positioned appropriately for receiving post. Consider glazing, panels, locks and internal hardware before drilling or cutting.

Letter Plate Tidies

A letter plate tidy is fitted around the postal aperture on the internal face of the door. It conceals the cut edges of the opening and creates a more finished appearance when viewed from inside the property.

Some tidies incorporate a flap, while others primarily provide a decorative surround. Check the individual design and make sure it is compatible with the external letter plate, aperture and door thickness.

The outer dimensions must cover the complete opening and any unwanted marks. Allow enough clearance for both the external and internal flaps to move without meeting or obstructing each other.

Replacing an Existing Front Door Letterbox

Measure the existing fitting before removing it. Record the external plate dimensions, aperture size, fixing centres and door thickness, as these measurements determine whether a replacement can use or cover the current opening.

A larger external plate may conceal previous marks, but its flap and fixing points must still align with the aperture. A smaller plate may expose unfinished areas or old fixing holes.

Check both faces of the door and confirm that the new external plate and internal tidy can be fitted without interfering with locks, glazing, reinforcement or decorative panels.

Planning a New Letter Plate Opening

Follow the product’s cutting dimensions or fitting template rather than estimating the aperture from the visible flap. The opening must be large enough for post to pass through without removing unnecessary material from the door.

Composite, metal, glazed, insulated and fire-rated doors can contain structural or performance-critical components. Cutting a new opening may affect the door’s security, weather resistance, fire performance or guarantee, so consult the door manufacturer or a qualified installer first.

Security and Weather Considerations

A door letter plate creates an opening through the entrance door. Consider its location in relation to internal locks, keys and handles, and use additional security products where appropriate for the property and door arrangement.

Weather sealing, draught reduction and security performance vary between products. Do not assume a decorative letter plate has a particular rating unless it is stated in the specification.
