Heritage Brass Door Locks, Latches and Bolts

Heritage Brass door locks and bolts provide functional hardware for closing or securing compatible doors. The right product depends on the door type, required operation and whether the fitting will be used as a primary lock, an additional closing point or a simple privacy feature.

This collection focuses on night latches and several types of door bolt. Each operates differently, so review the individual product specification rather than selecting by appearance or finish alone.

Night Latches

Night latches are surface-mounted door locks commonly installed on the internal face of an entrance door. The latch bolt engages with a keep on the frame when the door closes, although the precise operation varies between products.

A typical night latch may be operated by a key from outside and a knob or handle from inside. Some models may include additional locking or holdback functions, so check the individual product information carefully.

Before ordering a night latch, confirm:

  • The required backset from the door edge
  • The door thickness and construction
  • The opening direction and handing requirements
  • The dimensions of the lock case and frame keep
  • The supplied cylinder, keys and other components
  • Any required security rating or insurance standard

A night latch should not be assumed to provide a particular level of security unless the relevant rating or certification is stated in the product specification.

Tudor Door Bolts

Tudor door bolts provide a traditional surface-mounted design for suitable internal doors, cupboards and other applications. The decorative bolt remains visible on the face of the door, making its style and finish part of the overall door furniture.

The sliding bolt engages with a compatible keep fitted to the frame or adjoining surface. Check the direction of movement, bolt length, projection and available fixing area before installation.

Use a Tudor bolt only where its stated function and location are appropriate. A decorative door bolt may not be suitable as the primary security fitting on an external entrance door.

Flat Door Bolts

Flat door bolts are surface-mounted fittings with a relatively low-profile body. They can be used to hold suitable doors closed or provide an additional closing point, depending on the particular product and installation.

Before fitting a flat bolt, check that its body and keep can be aligned on level fixing surfaces. The bolt must move freely into the keep without being forced or placed under sideways pressure.

Measure the complete bolt body, fixing plate and bolt throw. Existing mouldings, door stops or frame details may affect where the keep can be positioned.

Slide Door Bolts

Slide bolts use a manually operated bolt that moves horizontally or vertically into a separate keep. They can be fitted to compatible doors where a straightforward surface-mounted closing mechanism is required.

The mounting position will depend on the door arrangement and intended use. A bolt installed near the top of a door may be less accessible, while one fitted lower down must not create an obstruction or interfere with surrounding hardware.

Check whether the selected product is suitable for vertical or horizontal installation. The door and frame must provide secure fixing points for both the bolt and its keep.

Flush Bolts

Flush bolts are recessed into the edge or face of a door so that much of the fitting sits level with the surrounding surface. They are often used to secure the inactive leaf of a suitable pair of doors, although compatibility depends on the particular door arrangement.

The bolt usually extends into a keep positioned in the head, threshold or adjoining frame. Accurate recessing and alignment are essential so that the mechanism operates smoothly and the door closes correctly.

Check the bolt length, faceplate dimensions, recess depth, throw and keep arrangement. Take care not to cut into glazing, joints or other structural parts of the door.

Choosing the Correct Door Bolt

Consider the required function before choosing between surface and flush-mounted bolts. Surface bolts are generally easier to see and access, while flush bolts provide a more recessed installation but require additional preparation of the door.

Important points to check include:

  • Whether the door is single, paired or part of another arrangement
  • The door and frame materials
  • The direction in which the bolt must move
  • The bolt throw and position of the keep
  • Available space for the body and fixing plates
  • Internal or external suitability
  • Any required security, fire or accessibility standard

Internal and External Applications

Not every door lock or bolt is suitable for external use. Outdoor fittings may be exposed to moisture, pollution and changing temperatures, while entrance-door security products may need to satisfy specific performance or insurance requirements.

Check the individual listing for material, finish, location and care information. Exterior suitability should never be inferred solely from a brass, bronze or dark-coloured finish.

Installing Door Locks and Bolts

Locks and bolts must align correctly with their keeps to operate reliably. Mark all components before drilling or cutting and check both sides of the door for existing locks, glazing and concealed fittings.

Fire-rated, composite, metal and security doors may have restrictions on the hardware or installation methods that can be used. Follow the door and hardware manufacturers’ guidance and seek professional installation where required.
