Why Choose Aged Brass Door Knobs?

Aged brass offers a softer and more established appearance than highly polished brass. Its warm, subdued tone complements traditional joinery, panelled doors, natural timber and heritage-inspired colour schemes.

The finish is well suited to restoration projects where new ironmongery needs to sit comfortably alongside older architectural features. It can also add warmth and contrast to simple contemporary doors.

Aged Brass and Antique Brass

Aged brass and antique brass are both intended to provide a less polished, more traditional appearance, but the terms are not standardised across the ironmongery industry. Their colour, texture, protective coating and ageing characteristics can differ between manufacturers.

Within our ranges, aged brass generally has a soft, muted brass tone, while antique brass door knobs tend to have a deeper and more time-worn appearance. Antique-brass options also include wooden door knobs with coordinating antique-brass rose plates.

Where exact coordination is important, compare the product photographs, stated material and finish details rather than relying on the finish name alone. Hardware ordered at different times may also show slight tonal variation.

Mortice and Rim Door Knobs

Before ordering, establish whether your door uses a mortice latch or a surface-mounted rim lock.

• Mortice door knobs operate a latch recessed into the edge of the door. Both knobs are normally mounted on roses fixed to the door faces.
• Rim door knobs are designed to operate a visible rim lock mounted on the face of the door. Their rose and spindle arrangement can differ from a standard mortice set.

Although the two types can appear similar, they are not always interchangeable. Check that the selected design is specifically compatible with your latch or lock.

Latch and Bathroom Sets

For an ordinary passage door, select the knobs alone for use with a compatible existing latch or choose a complete latch set. Bathroom doors require a suitable bathroom lock and turn-and-release mechanism to provide privacy.

Selected products are available with three-inch or four-inch latch and bathroom set options. Set contents vary, so confirm whether the chosen option includes the knobs, spindle, latch or lock, privacy turn and fixing screws.

Choosing the Correct Backset

Door knobs require enough clearance from the frame because your hand wraps around the knob when turning it. A longer latch backset positions the knob farther from the edge of the door and can make it more comfortable to use.

Before replacing existing hardware, check:

• The door thickness and required spindle length
• The latch backset and clearance from the frame
• The diameter of the knob and rose
• Existing screw holes or marks from previous hardware
• Whether the door has a mortice latch or rim lock
• Exactly what is included in the selected set
