Choosing Coastal Door Hardware

Salt air, moisture and direct weather exposure place greater demands on door hardware than a typical sheltered location. The level of exposure can also differ greatly between a protected property inland and a door facing direct coastal weather.

Consider the complete door rather than the handle alone. Handles, hinges, letter plates, lock furniture, knockers and fixings can all be exposed to the same conditions, so each component should be checked for its stated application.

Marine Stainless Steel Door Hardware

Selected products in this collection are available in Satin Marine Stainless Steel and Polished Marine Stainless Steel finishes. The range includes lever handles, multipoint handles, door knobs, pull handles, letter plates, escutcheons and other entrance fittings.

Marine stainless steel still requires appropriate care. Salt and surface deposits should not be allowed to build up indefinitely, and the maintenance method should follow the guidance for the exact product and finish.

Armor-Coat Door Hardware

Armor-Coat is used across a range of steel door and window hardware, including lever handles, multipoint handles, escutcheons, knockers, letter plates, hinges, bolts and thumb latches.

Handles and Multipoint Door Hardware

Coastal suitability does not override normal handle and lock compatibility. Conventional lever handles still need the appropriate latch or lock arrangement, while multipoint handles must match the existing locking mechanism.

Fixings and Exposure

The fixings used with coastal ironmongery are part of the installation, not an afterthought. Use the fixings specified for the product and avoid substituting screws or other components without confirming their suitability.

Different materials, coatings and fixings can react differently when exposed to salt and moisture. Product-level instructions should take priority over general finish advice.

Caring for Coastal Door Hardware

Coastal hardware should be inspected and cleaned regularly according to the material and finish. Marine stainless steel, Armor-Coat, brass, bronze and other finishes do not all use the same maintenance method.
