What Is a Multipoint Door Handle?

A multipoint door handle is designed to operate a multipoint locking mechanism installed within the edge of a door. Lifting or turning the lever engages the mechanism’s locking points, which may include hooks, bolts or rollers positioned along the door edge.

The handle is only one component of the complete locking system. The security provided by the door depends on the lock, cylinder, handle, keeps, door construction and quality of installation. A replacement handle should therefore be selected for compatibility as well as appearance.

Where Are Multipoint Handles Used?

Multipoint handles are commonly fitted to:

• External entrance doors
• Patio doors
• French doors
• Composite doors
• Timber doors with multipoint locks
• Selected uPVC and aluminium door systems

Compatibility cannot be determined from the door material alone. Always compare the handle and lock measurements shown in the individual product listing with your existing hardware.

Entry, Patio and Passage Handles

Different multipoint handle configurations are available for different door arrangements. Options within the range may include:

• Entry handles with a cylinder profile on both backplates, allowing the door to be locked or unlocked from either side.
• Patio handles with a cylinder profile on one backplate only, typically used where key-operated access is required from one side.
• Passage handles with blank backplates, which may be used on the inactive or secondary leaf of selected French-door arrangements.

Not every design is available in every configuration, so check the selected product variation before ordering.

How to Measure a Multipoint Door Handle

Multipoint handles are not universally interchangeable. If you are replacing an existing set, remove and measure the current handle carefully. Important measurements include:

• PZ centres: the distance from the centre of the lever spindle to the centre of the keyhole or Euro cylinder.
• Fixing centres: the distance between the centres of the fixing screws.
• Backplate dimensions: the overall length and width of the plate.
• Spindle dimensions: the spindle width and the length required for the door.
• Door thickness: needed to confirm that the spindle and fixings are suitable.
• Lever clearance: the space between the lever and the door frame or other fittings.
• Cylinder profile: the shape and position of the cylinder opening, where applicable.
• Handle operation: whether the lock requires sprung or unsprung handles and the amount of lever movement needed to operate it.

Small differences in the PZ or fixing centres can prevent a handle from fitting. Use the technical drawing on the individual product page rather than relying only on the handle’s overall appearance.

Sprung and Unsprung Multipoint Handles

A sprung handle contains its own spring assistance to return the lever to the horizontal position. An unsprung handle relies more heavily on the spring mechanism within the multipoint lock.

Fitting the wrong type can result in poor lever operation or place unnecessary strain on the lock. Check the existing mechanism or ask your installer whether a sprung or unsprung handle is required.

Handed Multipoint Door Handles

Some straight lever designs can be used on either side of the door, while curved, scroll or offset handles may be handed. Where handing applies, confirm whether a left- or right-handed version is needed by following the handing guide provided with the product.

Materials and Finishes

Replacing Your Existing Handles

If your existing handles have become worn or damaged, first check that the multipoint lock operates correctly with the door open. A stiff or failing lock may not be resolved by fitting new handles and could damage the replacement set.

Multipoint handles may be supplied without the lock mechanism or Euro cylinder. Check the product contents carefully and retain or replace the other components as required. For security-sensitive entrance doors, professional fitting by a competent locksmith or installer is recommended.
