What Are Unlacquered Brass Door Handles?

Unlacquered brass does not have the clear protective lacquer used on many decorative brass finishes. The exposed surface reacts naturally to handling, air and moisture, so its appearance changes gradually rather than remaining exactly as it looked when new.

Antique Brass and Unlacquered Brass

On the products currently shown in this collection, the unlacquered option is labelled Antique Brass. The individual product specifications state that this Antique Brass finish is unlacquered and will darken over time.

Many of the same handle designs are also available in alternative finishes such as bronze, chrome, nickel or black. Those alternative variants should not be assumed to behave in the same way as the unlacquered Antique Brass finish.

How Does Unlacquered Brass Change?

The surface will not necessarily darken evenly. Areas that are handled frequently can develop differently from less-used parts of the handle, and the rate of change depends on use, moisture and the surrounding environment.

Fingerprints, darker areas and variation in tone are normal characteristics of an unlacquered finish rather than evidence that every piece will remain visually identical.

Backplate and Lever-on-Rose Handles
