What Is a Door Escutcheon?

An escutcheon is a small plate fitted around a keyhole or lock cylinder. It conceals the cut edge in the door, helps protect the surrounding surface from keys and provides a finished appearance around the lock.

Escutcheons are commonly used with deadlocks and sash locks. They may also be used with selected rim locks and Euro-profile locking systems, provided the escutcheon matches the shape and position of the lock opening.

An escutcheon is primarily decorative and protective. Unless specifically described otherwise, it does not increase the security rating of the lock.

Covered and Uncovered Keyhole Covers

Our collection includes both open and covered escutcheons:

• Uncovered escutcheons leave the keyhole permanently accessible and provide a simple, understated finish.
• Covered escutcheons include a movable cover that sits over the keyhole when it is not in use.

A covered design can conceal the keyhole and help protect the surrounding area from dust and everyday contact. It should not be treated as a weather seal or additional security device unless the product is specifically designed and tested for that purpose.

• Round escutcheons offer a classic and versatile appearance.
• Oval escutcheons provide a traditional shape suited to period interiors.
• Pear-drop escutcheons have an elongated decorative cover and pair particularly well with wooden door knobs.
• Square escutcheons create a cleaner geometric finish for modern handles.
• Euro-profile escutcheons are shaped specifically to surround a Euro cylinder.

Choosing the Correct Keyhole Profile

The opening in the escutcheon must match the lock or cylinder fitted to the door. A traditional lever-lock keyhole, a BS-profile keyhole and a Euro cylinder require differently shaped openings.

Before ordering, identify the lock type and compare the escutcheon dimensions with the existing keyhole. If replacing an old plate, also check that the new escutcheon will cover previous screw holes, paint lines or marks.

Where escutcheons are needed on both sides of the door, confirm whether the product is sold singly or as a pair. Many decorative escutcheons are supplied individually.

Materials and Finishes

Available materials and finishes vary across the collection and may include:

• Satin brass and traditional brass finishes
• Polished chrome, polished nickel and satin nickel
• Matt black, black beeswax and antique iron
• Oil-rubbed, rustic and urban bronze

Some metal finishes naturally change through handling and exposure, while plated or coated finishes are intended to remain closer to their original appearance. Review the individual care information before cleaning or polishing.

Matching Escutcheons with Door Furniture

Coordinate your escutcheons with our collection of door knobs or door handles. Beehive and pear-drop covers work particularly well with traditional wooden knobs, while plain round or square designs complement lever handles on rose.

Finishes with the same name can vary slightly between materials and manufacturers. For the closest match, choose the escutcheon recommended for the same handle or knob range wherever possible.

Internal and External Escutcheons

Not every escutcheon is intended for an exterior door. External fittings must be manufactured from a suitable material and supplied with fixings appropriate for outdoor exposure.

For entrance doors, choose from products specifically described as exterior escutcheons and coordinate them with suitable exterior door furniture. Coastal and highly exposed locations may require specialist corrosion-resistant finishes.

Measuring and Installation

Before installation, check the escutcheon’s overall dimensions, keyhole profile, fixing-hole positions and projection. Position the plate carefully so that the key can enter and turn without catching the edge of the opening.

Use suitable pilot holes and avoid overtightening the screws, particularly when fitting to thin, old or previously repaired timber. Covered escutcheons should move freely without rubbing against the door or obstructing the key.
