Cast Iron Door Knobs

Cast iron door knobs are a traditional choice for internal doors, period properties, cottages and utility spaces. Their solid feel and black or pewter-style finishes make them well suited to interiors where stronger, more practical ironmongery is preferred.

Our cast iron door knobs are supplied as unsprung knobs with separate rose plates, mortice bars and fixings. Selected options are also available as latch sets or bathroom sets, depending on the product. Because cast iron knobs are heavier than some wooden or brass alternatives, they should be paired with a suitable latch or lock with enough spring strength to return the knob properly.

Cast iron is best suited to internal use. Bathrooms, kitchens and damp rooms need more care, as cast iron is a ferrous material and can oxidise if moisture reaches the metal beneath the finish. For exposed external doors, brass, bronze or stainless steel may be a better long-term choice.

Choosing cast iron door knobs

Before ordering, check whether your door needs a standard mortice latch, bathroom lock or rim lock. Many cast iron door knobs are unsprung, so the latch or lock behind them needs to provide the return action.

A heavy-duty tubular latch or good quality mortice lock is usually the safest choice for unsprung cast iron knobs. A weak latch may not return the knob cleanly and can make the door feel unreliable in daily use.

Cast iron door knobs work particularly well with traditional black hardware, pewter finishes, rim lock door knob sets and hand-forged hinges. They suit internal doors in cottages, Victorian-style interiors and practical spaces where a heavier traditional finish is wanted.

If you are fitting cast iron knobs to a bathroom door, choose a suitable bathroom lock and turn and release. The room should be well ventilated, and the finish should be kept dry where possible.

Internal use and care

Cast iron door knobs are generally best used indoors. They can be suitable for hallways, bedrooms, living rooms, utility rooms and traditional internal doors, but they should be treated with more caution in damp or exposed areas.

For cleaning, use a soft cloth and avoid abrasive pads, harsh cleaners or metal polishes. If the finish becomes chipped, touch in the exposed area promptly with a suitable protective product to reduce the risk of oxidation.
