What Is Grade 316 Marine-Grade Stainless Steel?

Grade 316 is a high-performance stainless steel alloy containing chromium, nickel and molybdenum. The addition of molybdenum improves its resistance to corrosion caused by moisture and chlorides, including salt carried in coastal air.

This makes marine-grade stainless steel a practical choice for seaside properties and other locations where standard steel, iron or unsuitable plated finishes may deteriorate more quickly.

Although Grade 316 offers excellent corrosion resistance, it is not completely maintenance-free. Salt, dirt and atmospheric deposits should be removed regularly, particularly from exterior hardware in coastal areas.

Satin and Polished Stainless Steel Finishes

The collection is available in two coordinating finishes:

  • Satin Marine Stainless Steel has a softly brushed surface for a subtle, architectural appearance.
  • Polished Marine Stainless Steel has a brighter, reflective surface that creates a more prominent decorative feature.

The underlying marine-grade material provides the same practical benefits, so the choice between satin and polished can be based primarily on the appearance you want to achieve.

Stainless Steel Door Furniture

Our stainless steel door furniture includes lever handles, centre door knobs, door knockers, letter plates and other entrance fittings. These products can be coordinated to create a consistent finish across an external or internal door.

Selected door handles are available for latch, lock and Euro-profile applications, alongside lever-on-rose and multipoint options. Always confirm that the handle is compatible with the latch or locking system fitted to your door.

Centre door knobs are decorative pull fittings and do not normally operate a latch or lock. Door knockers and letter plates should also be checked against the construction and thickness of the door before drilling.

Stainless Steel Cabinet Hardware

Stainless steel cabinet knobs and handles are a practical choice for kitchens, bathrooms, utility rooms and coastal homes. Their clean appearance works well with painted cabinetry, natural timber and contemporary fitted furniture.

When replacing an existing pull handle, measure the centre-to-centre distance between its fixing holes. For cabinet knobs, check the diameter, projection and fixing-screw length against the thickness of the drawer or cupboard door.

Stainless Steel Window Furniture

Marine-grade stainless steel window hardware is well suited to rooms and properties exposed to moisture or salt air. The wider collection includes coordinating window fittings for selected sash and casement window applications.

Window hardware is not universally interchangeable. Check the window type, fixing pattern, overall dimensions and required function before ordering replacement fittings.

Stainless Steel Hinges

Stainless steel door hinges can provide increased resistance to corrosion on suitable internal and external doors. However, the correct hinge must also be selected according to the door weight, dimensions, material and required fire rating.

Do not assume that every stainless steel hinge is fire-rated or suitable for every external door. Refer to the individual technical specification before installation.

Stainless Steel Home and Garden Hardware

The stainless steel range also includes selected home and garden fittings. These can be coordinated with door, window and cabinet hardware to carry the same satin or polished finish throughout a property.

For outdoor use, confirm the individual product’s material, construction and fixing requirements. Surrounding components and fixings should also be appropriate for the level of exposure.

Marine-Grade Hardware for Coastal Properties

Coastal homes experience salt-laden air, higher moisture levels and stronger weather exposure. These conditions can accelerate corrosion and cause unsuitable coatings or plated finishes to deteriorate.

Grade 316 stainless steel is designed to offer improved resistance in these environments. It is therefore a strong option for front doors, garden rooms, bathrooms, kitchens and other exposed or moisture-prone areas.

The complete installation should still be considered. Locks, spindles, screws, internal mechanisms and surrounding fittings may require separate checks for coastal suitability.

Choosing Compatible Stainless Steel Hardware

Before ordering, review the technical drawing and check:

  • The overall product dimensions and projection
  • The distance between fixing centres
  • The thickness and construction of the door, window or cabinet
  • The size and location of existing holes
  • The required latch, lock or spindle measurements
  • Whether the product is suitable for internal or external use
  • Whether hinges meet the required load or fire specification
  • Which fixings and accessories are supplied

Never drill new fixing holes until you have checked the physical product and its technical drawing against the intended installation.

Caring for Marine-Grade Stainless Steel

Clean stainless steel hardware with a soft cloth and mild soapy water. Rinse away cleaning residue and dry the surface to reduce water marks.

Avoid wire wool, abrasive pads, bleach and cleaners containing chlorides. These can scratch the surface, contaminate the stainless steel or affect the appearance of the finish.

Exterior hardware in coastal locations should be cleaned more frequently to remove salt deposits. When cleaning a satin finish, wipe in the direction of the visible grain.
