Flush Pull Handles for Sliding Doors

A flush pull is recessed into the face of a timber door so that it sits level with, or close to, the door surface. This makes flush pulls particularly suitable for pocket doors, where a projecting lever or knob could prevent the door from entering the wall cavity.

Round, Square or Rectangular Flush Pulls

The best shape depends on the door, available fitting depth and desired appearance:

• Round flush pulls provide a compact fitting and suit both traditional and contemporary doors.
• Square flush pulls create a clean, geometric appearance for modern interiors.
• Rectangular flush pulls offer a larger gripping area and are available in several lengths and decorative styles.

Check the overall size and required recess rather than selecting by appearance alone. A larger pull may offer more grip but will also require a larger cut-out in the door.

What Is an Edge Pull?

An edge pull is fitted into the closing edge of a sliding or pocket door. It allows the door to be retrieved when it has been pushed fully inside the wall pocket and the face-mounted flush pulls are no longer accessible.

Not every sliding door requires an edge pull. Whether one is needed will depend on how far the door enters the pocket, the position of the face pulls and the door’s stopping arrangement.

These fittings provide privacy for internal rooms. They should not be treated as security locks for external doors or other areas requiring certified protection.

Hook Locks and Tubular Privacy Locks

A sliding-door hook lock uses a hook-shaped bolt that engages with a striker fitted to the frame. This helps secure a door that closes sideways rather than swinging into the frame like a hinged door.

The collection also includes tubular privacy lock options. Their fitting arrangements, controls and compatible doors differ from the hook-lock sets, so compare the technical drawings and installation requirements carefully.

Sliding-Door Hanging Systems and Kits

Hanging systems and sliding-door hardware kits provide the components that support and guide the door. Depending on the product, a system may include a track, hangers, guides, stops and optional soft-close components.

Handles and locks do not determine whether a door is compatible with a particular hanging system. Before ordering a track or kit, confirm:

• The door width, height, thickness and weight
• Whether the installation is for a single or double door
• The required track length and opening width
• The available wall, ceiling and headroom clearance
• Whether the door slides alongside the wall or into a pocket
• Whether soft-close components are included, optional or compatible
• The construction and load-bearing capacity of the supporting structure

A pocket-door cassette or hanging system should be selected before the surrounding wall and joinery are completed.

Materials and Finishes

Many flush pulls and visible accessories are manufactured from solid brass and finished in aged brass, matt bronze, polished chrome, satin brass or satin nickel. Lock sets and hanging systems may also contain steel, zinc alloy, plastic or other functional components.

Materials, supplied fixings and finish construction vary by product. Refer to the individual specification if an exact material or matching fixing type is required.

What to Measure Before Ordering

For flush pulls and edge pulls, check:

• The overall height and width or diameter
• The depth and dimensions of the required recess
• The door thickness
• The pull projection after installation
• The location of rails, stiles, glazing or internal door construction
• The amount of clearance available inside the wall pocket

For privacy locks, also check:

• The lock backset
• The required door-edge preparation
• The door thickness accepted by the turn-and-release fittings
• The striker dimensions and frame position
• The relationship between the lock, flush pulls and edge pull

For example, the current round and square hook-lock privacy sets are offered with 40mm or 50mm backsets and suit doors between 35mm and 52mm thick. These measurements should not be assumed for every lock in the collection.

Planning the Installation

Flush pulls and lock cases require accurate recesses to be cut into the door. Confirm the product dimensions before machining, and check that the proposed cut-out will not weaken the door or interfere with its internal construction.

If the door forms part of a fire-rated assembly, only use hardware and installation methods approved for that doorset. Cutting unapproved recesses into a fire door can affect its certification and performance.

For a pocket-door project, it is best to select the door system, handles, edge pull and privacy lock together. This allows their dimensions and operating clearances to be checked before the wall pocket is closed.

Coordinating Your Sliding-Door Hardware

Using the same finish for flush pulls, edge pulls and privacy controls can create a consistent appearance. These finishes can also be coordinated with compatible cabinet, window and door furniture elsewhere in the room.
